Comet 12P/Pons-Brooks bright outburst: an image – 23 July 2023
Comet 12P/Pons-Brooks was spotted in a bright outburst on July 20. Three days later, once the sky was clear, we imaged it under good seeing conditions.
The image above comes from the average of 24, 180-second exposures, remotely taken with the Celestron C14+Paramount ME+SBIG ST8-XME robotic unit available as part of the Virtual Telescope Project facility in Manciano, Italy. Images were collected under good seeing conditions. The comet shows an interesting horseshoe shape.
The image above was gently processed to show both the brightest, central regions and the delicate, outer coma.
We plan further follow-up observations, to track the evolution of this intriguing icy world.
