Comet 12P/Pons-Brooks: a new, deep image – 10 Aug. 2023

We observed comet 12P/Pons-Brooks under very good sky conditions, going quite deep and recording a faint structure in the coma. here we present our image.

Comet 12P/Pons-Brooks: 10 Aug. 2023.

Comet 12P/Pons-Brooks: 10 Aug. 2023.

The image above comes from the median combination of 39, 180-second unfiltered exposures, plus some additional processing and were remotely taken with the Celestron C14+Paramount ME+SBIG ST8-XME robotic unit available as part of the Virtual Telescope Project facility in Manciano, Italy. Images were collected under good seeing conditions and the total of about 2 hours of exposure interestingly shows faint, radial rays in the East side of the coma. This comet showed a five mag. large outburst on 20 July.

In the upper right inset, a 15deg Larso-Sekanina rotational gradient was applied (the scale here was reduced to 50% of the original one).
