Comet 12P/Pons-Brooks again in bright outburst: an image – 8 Oct. 2023
Comet 12P/Pons-Brooks was spotted again in a bright outburst on 5 Oct., after the one in July. Three days later, we captured it under good sky conditions and we see the same horseshoe shape.
The image above comes from the median combination of 19, 180-second exposures, remotely taken with the Celestron C14+Paramount ME+SBIG ST8-XME robotic unit available as part of the Virtual Telescope Project facility in Manciano, Italy. Images were collected under good seeing conditions. A new outburst was recored on 5 Oct., like the one showed on 20 July. The comet shows again an interesting horseshoe shape.
In the panel, the original image in in the center, gently processed to preserve its features; on the upper left inset it was processed via Richardson-Lucy deconvolution, while in the bottom right one we applied a 15 deg. Larson-Sekanina rotational gradient.
We plan further follow-up observations.
