Comet 12P/Pons-Brooks in outburst: 18 Jan. 2024
Here it is comet 12P/Pons-Brooks soon after it started a new outburst, while approaching the Sun. It shows a faint tail.
The image above comes from the average of 5, 120-second unfiltered exposures, remotely taken with the ARTEC250+Paramount ME+C3Pro61000EC robotic unit available as part of the Virtual Telescope Project facility in Manciano, Italy. The resulting master frame was carefully processed to show the faint tail and structure of the inner coma. A 56% Moon was high in the sky.
At the time of the image above, comet 12P/Pons-Brooks had just started a new outburst. A 56% Moon was high in theLuckily enough, we could capture it while it was setting. To our knowledge, this should be the 7th outburst of this intriguing comet since July 2023.
We will continue monitoring comet 12P/Pons-Brooks over the next weeks, as it approaches its perihelion, next 21 April.
