Valentine’s Day potentially hazardous asteroid 2024 BR4: an image – 4 Feb. 2024
Next 14 Feb. 2024, just on-time for Valentine’s Day, the potentially hazardous asteroid 2024 BR4 will have a relatively close and obviously safe close encounter with our planet. Here it is an image of this rock.
Potentially Hazardous Asteroid 2024 BR4: 3 Feb. 2024.
The image above comes from the average of four, 120-second exposure, remotely taken with the Celestron C14+Paramount ME+SBIG ST8-XME robotic unit available as part of the Virtual Telescope Project, Manciano (GR), Italy. The telescope tracked the asteroid, this is why it looks like a sharp dot of light, while stars leave bright streaks on the background.
At the imaging time, asteroid 2024 BR4 was at about 12 million of km from the Earth and it was slowly approaching us. The asteroid was discovered by the Catalina Sky Survey on 30 Jan. 2024.
This 130m – 300m large asteroid will reach its minimum distance (4.6 million of km, about 12 times the average lunar distance) from us on 14 Feb. 2024, around 11:00 UTC (source: Nasa/JPL). Of course, there are no risks at all for our planet.
