Supernova SN 2024iss in the PGC 1846725 galaxy: an image – 13 May 2024.
We imaged supernova SN 2024iss in PGC 1846725 while it was still waiting for confirmation, finding it quite bright.
The image above comes from the average of eight, 120-second exposures, unfiltered and unguided, remotely taken with the C14+Paramount ME+ST8-XME robotic unit available as part of the Virtual Telescope Project facility in Manciano, Italy.
When we imaged this transient, its real nature was still unconfirmed. It has been discovered 24 hours before our observation, when it was at mag. 14.6. Its temporary designation was AT 2024iss.
We estimated SN 2024iss as bright as mag. 12.7 (unfiltered, R-mags for the reference stars from the Gaia DR2 star catalogue), so much brighter than at the discovery time. Later, it was confirmed to be a type II supernova, found early in its explosion.
The host galaxy is the pale PGC 1846725 galaxy, which is simply outclassed in brightness by its supernova.
We will track this transient as long as possible.
