Comet 13P/Olbers: a couple of images – 31 July 2024

Here we present new images of comet 13P/Olbers, while leaving the inner Solar System, after its perihelion.

Comet 13P/Olbers: 31 July 2024.

Comet 13P/Olbers: 31 July 2024.

The image above comes from the sigma clipping combination of 7, 120-second unfiltered exposures, remotely taken with the “Elena” (PlaneWave 17″ + Paramount MEII + SBIG STL-6303E) robotic unit available as part of the Virtual Telescope Project facility in Manciano, Italy. The telescope tracked the object while imaging, which was just 20 deg. above the Western horizon. Hazy sky, twilight.

At the same time of the image above, our ARTEC250+Paramount ME+C3Pro61000EC robotic unit collected larger field of view data, used to create the picture below, using 9, 120-second exposures, sigma clipping combined.

The image was carefully processed to keep both the brightest central region and faint ion tail visible.
