Comet C/2023 A3 Tsuchinshan-ATLAS: antitail observation and two comets at a glance – 14 & 15 Oct. 2024.

Between 14 & 15 Oct. 2024, the Earth will cross the orbital plane of comet C/2023 A3 Tsuchinshan-ATLAS. Under these conditions, an antitail could be visible, pointing in the direction of the Sun. We will check this in real-time with you and will see two comets at a glance!

The antitail is a spectacular effect due to the special geometry offered by the Earth crossing the orbital plane of a comet, the C/2023 A3 Tsuchinshan-ATLAS one in this case. It seems to point in the direction of the Sun.

So, during 14-15 Oct., our comet could show TWO tails: the ordinary one and, of course, the antitail.

Furthermore, on 15 Oct., we will see two comets at a glance! On that evening, the bright C/2023 A3 will share the same spot of the sky with comet 13P/Olbers, which was remarkable a few months ago. On the same evening, the marvelous globular cluster Messier 5 will be in the same field of view.
