Near-Earth Asteroid 2024 VX3 very close encounter: an image – 13 Nov. 2024.
We imaged the near-Earth Asteroid 2024 VX3 on its way to a very close, but safe encounter with the Earth next 4 Dec., coming as close as 145.000 km from us, 39% of the average lunar distance.
The image above comes from a single 30-second exposure, remotely taken with the “Elena” (PlaneWave 17″ + Paramount MEII + SBIG STL-6303E) robotic unit available as part of the Virtual Telescope Project. The telescope tracked the fast apparent motion of the asteroid, so it looks like a sharp dot of light, indicated with a red arrow, while stars leave long, bright streaks on the background.
At the imaging time, asteroid 2024 VX3 was at about 150.000 km from us, almost at its minimum distance.
This 10-meter large asteroid will reach its minimum distance (about 145.000 km, 39% of the average lunar distance) from us on 13 Nov. 2024, at 19:44 UTC (source: Nasa/JPL). Of course, there are no risks at all for our planet.
