2024 Geminid Meteor shower: online observation – 13 Dec. 2024
Next 13-14 Dec. 2024, the Geminid meteors will be back. This year, the Moon will be almost full, so it will significantly spoil the show. Nonetheless, we will share the experience live, to show the brightest meteors in real time!
The Geminid meteor shower is the strongest meteor shower of the year, quite neglected by the audience because of the cold, winter temperatures in the northern hemisphere, but is very spectacular. Quite interestingly, the Geminids – so called because the apparent source of their trails, the radiant, is placed in the constellation of Gemini (the Twins) – originates from an asteroid, (3200) Phaethon, this making them one of the only two showers sharing this feature.
This year, unfortunately, the full Moon will ruin the show and only the brightest meteors will be visibile. While this shower offers at its peak 100 meteors per hour under dark skies, this time we can likely expect 15 shooting stars per hour.
We will set up a special, very large field of view equipment in Manciano, under the darkest skies of Italy and will share the brightest meteors in real-time!
We scheduled a live feed on 13 Dec. 2023, starting at 23:00 UT.
