Lucy close fly-by with the Earth: online observation – 13 Dec. 2024
Next 13 Dec. 2024 the Lucy spacecraft, on its way to Jupiter’s Trojan asteroids, will have its second, close fly-by with the Earth. The Virtual Telescope Project will show the probe to you live, online!
The Lucy spacecraft will reach a minimum distance from the Earth’s surface on 13 Dec., at 04:16 UTC, passing at 350 km from it. This first fly-by will help the probe to gain some energy to reach its destination: the exploration of a few Jupiter trojan asteroids.
This fly-by will happen almost exactly three years after Lucy was launched and two years after the previous fly-by with the Earth. We will show the probe just minutes hours after it, as soon as the spacecraft will be visible in the Italian skies. The probe will be back to the Earth for another gravity assist in Dec. 2030.
Our live event showing Lucy during its fly-by is scheduled for 13 Dec. 2024, starting at 04:30 UTC.
