Extremely bright fireball in Central Italy: 29 Dec. 2024
On the night of 29 Dec. 2024, an extremely bright fireball was visible from Italy, we luckily captured it with our allsky camera.
The image above comes from our allsky camera, light was collected between 23:39:07 and 23:39:57 UTC , with the central exposure being 23:39:32 UTC (we are working to refine these data).
The extreme brightness is so obvious, as the fireball saturated the imaging device, despite its motion and short duration: from this, we would estimate its brightness between mag. -10 and -8 (very preliminary estimate); the color is clearly dominated by a blue hue. As a reference, the brightest dot in the image (on the right) is planet Jupiter, at mag. -2.7, but with its light integrated for 50 seconds. The bright, red dot left from the center is Mars (mag. 1-2).
Further analysis is under way.
