Supernova SN 2024aeee in the NGC 2523 galaxy: an image – 28 Dec. 2024.

We spotted supernova SN 2024aeee in the truly elegant, barred spiral galaxy NGC 2523, see our image below.

The image above comes from the average of 4, 300-second, unguided exposures, unfiltered, remotely taken with the (PlaneWave 17″ + Paramount MEII + SBIG STL-6303E)  robotic unit available as part of the Virtual Telescope Project in Manciano, Italy. The supernova is indicated by an arrow in the upper right insert.

We estimated SN 2024aeee as bright as mag. 14.9 (R-mags for the reference stars from the Gaia DR2 star catalogue). SN 2024aeee was discovered on 17 Dec. 2024 and it is a type II supernova.

The host galaxy is the fascinating NGC 2523 barred spiral galaxy: it is located at about 170 million light years from us.
