NGC 891 spiral galaxy: an image – 29 Dec. 2024
NGC 891 is an iconic edge-on spiral galaxy and we are pleased to share our most recent image of this gem.
The image above comes from the average of 12, 300-second exposures, remotely taken with the “Elena” (PlaneWave 17″ + Paramount MEII + SBIG STL-6303E) robotic unit available as part of the Virtual Telescope Project. .
NGC 891 (NGC 650/651) was discovered by William Herschel in 1784 and it is a perfectly edge-on spiral galaxy: it is one of the most famous objects of its type. It is considered similar to our Milky Way, if seen edge-on, as it looks like from the Southern Hemisphere.
In deep images as the one above, the dark, dusty bar crossing the bulge is very apparent. That feature comes from the dust placed on the disk plane of the galaxy, which is placed at 27 millions of light years from us.
