Near-Earth Asteroid 2025 BB2 very close encounter: an image – 29 Jan. 2025.

We imaged the near-Earth Asteroid 2025 BB2, going to have a very close, but safe encounter with the Earth on 4 Feb. 2025, coming as close as 291.000 km from us, 76% of the average lunar distance.

The image above comes from a single 300-second exposure, remotely taken with the “Elena” (PlaneWave 17″ + Paramount MEII + SBIG STL-6303E) robotic unit available as part of the Virtual Telescope Project. The telescope tracked the apparent motion of the asteroid, indicated with a white arrow in the center of the image.

At the imaging time, asteroid 2025 BB2 was at about 2.9 millions km from us, safely approaching the Earth.

This 21-48 meter large asteroid will reach its minimum distance (about 291.000 km, 76% of the average lunar distance) from us on 4 Feb. 2025, at 04:38 UTC (source: Nasa/JPL). Of course, there were no risks at all for our planet.
