Supernova SN 2025oq in the NGC 2744 galaxy: an image – 28 Jan. 2025.
We observed supernova SN 2025oq in the barred spiral galaxy NGC 2744 and here we present our image.
The image above comes from the average of 5, 120-second, unguided exposures, unfiltered, remotely taken with the “Elena” (PlaneWave 17″ + Paramount MEII + SBIG STL-6303E) robotic unit available as part of the Virtual Telescope Project in Manciano, Italy. The supernova is indicated by an arrow in the upper left insert.
We estimated SN 2025oq as bright as mag. 15.0 (R-mags for the reference stars from the Gaia DR2 star catalogue). SN 2025oq was discovered on 17 Jan. 2025 and it is a type Ic supernova.
The host galaxy is NGC 2744, a barred spiral galaxy located at about 150 million light years from us. Looking at our image, we see a faint “tail” from the galaxy and pointing north, likely an effect coming from tidal interaction. NGC 2744 belongs to the group of NGC 2749, visible on the bottom right.
