Near-Earth Asteroid 2018 VX1 very close encounter: a great live event with amazing images – 10 Nov. 2018
Last night, our live feed covering the very close approach of asteroid 2018 VX1 was a huge success: may thousands of people, from all over the world, joined our journey and the Virtual Telescope showed that little rock while it surfed the sky. Here it is one image and the video podcast.

The image above comes from a single, 300-seconds exposure, remotely taken with “Elena” (PlaneWave 17″+Paramount ME+SBIG STL-6303E) robotic unit available at Virtual Telescope. The telescope tracked the apparent motion (208″/minute) of the asteroid, this is why stars show as long trails, while the asteroid looks like a sharp dot of light in the center of the image.
At the imaging time, asteroid 2018 VX1 was at about 375.000 of km from the Earth, which is a bit less than the Moon.
Below is the video podcast of the event, just in case you missed it!
