Near-Earth Asteroid 2019 UG11 very close encounter: an image (30 Oct. 2019)

Next 1 Nov. 2019, the near-Earth asteroid 2019 UG11 will have a safe, very close encounter with the Earth, coming at about 210.000 km from us, marginally more than half of the average distance the Moon. Here it is an image we captured last night.

The image above comes from a single 180-seconds exposure, remotely taken with “Elena” (PlaneWave 17″+Paramount ME+SBIG STL-6303E) robotic unit available at Virtual Telescope. The telescope tracked the apparent motion of the asteroid, this is why stars show as long trails, while the asteroid looks like a faint, sharp dot of light in the center of the image, marked by an arrow.

At the imaging time, asteroid 2019 UG11 was at about 1.6 millions of km from the Earth and it was on its way approaching us.

This 13 – 29 meters large asteroid was discovered on 29 Oct. 2019 by the Mt Lemmon survey in Arizona (USA) and it  will reach its minimum distance (210.000 km) from us on 1 Nov. 2019, at 20:42 UTC. Of course, there are no risks at all for our planet.
