Last night the sky was apparently clear, so at Virtual Telescope we started a new imaging session of comet C/2014 Q2 Lovejoy. Unfortunately, the weather changed rapidly, allowing us to capture only an high-res view of the inner coma and tail. The session was well-worth the attempt.
The image above comes from the average of six, 120-seconds unfiltered exposures, remotely collected with the PlaneWave 17″+Paramount ME+SBIG STL-6303E robotic unit part of the Virtual Telescope Project. The telescope tracked at the apparent rate of the comet. The image was properly enhanced to reveal the amazingly complex pattern of the ion tail. Both the ordinary and negative palettes are shown. A curious satellite trail is visible, with evidence of its rotation.
