Near-Earth Asteroid 2023 BU extremely close encounter: online observation – 26 Jan. 2023
Next 27 Jan. 2023, the near-Earth Asteroid 2023 BU will have an extremely close, but safe, encounter with us, coming at less than 10.000 km from the Earth’s center, about 25% of the geostationary satellites distance. The Virtual Telescope Project will show it to you live!

The near-Earth asteroid 2023 BU was discovered by G. Borisov on 21 Jan. 2023 and announced the following day. Its diameter in estimated in 3.7 – 8.2 meters the range, while the minimum distance from us will be reached on 27 Jan. 2023 at 00:17 UTC, when this rock will be at 9800 km from the center of the Earth (source: Nasa/JPL). That is 25% of the distance of geostationary satellites, less than 3% of the average lunar distance. Respect to the Earth’s surface, this asteroid will fly just 3500 km above it.
