Near-Earth Asteroid 2024 JN16 extremely close encounter: online observation – 14 May 2024

In a few hours, the near-Earth Asteroid 2024 JN16 will have an extremely close, but safe, encounter with us, coming at 19.000 km from the Earth’s surface, about 50% of the geostationary satellites distance. The Virtual Telescope Project will show it to you live!

The near-Earth asteroid 2024 JN16 was discovered by G. Borisov on 12 May 2024 and announced the following day. Its diameter in estimated in 3.2 – 7.1 meters the range, while the minimum distance from us will be reached on 14 May 2024, at 09:50 UTC, when this rock will be at 19000 km from the surface of the Earth (source: Nasa/JPL). That is 50% of the distance of geostationary satellites, about 6% of the average lunar distance. Respect to the Earth’s surface, this asteroid will fly just 19.000 km above it.
