Supernova SN 2024aeee in the NGC 2523 galaxy: an image – 30 Dec. 2024.
We imaged supernova SN 2024aeee and its host barred spiral galaxy NGC 2523, sharing our picture below.
The image above comes from the average of 13, 300-second, unguided exposures, unfiltered, remotely taken with the (PlaneWave 17″ + Paramount MEII + SBIG STL-6303E) robotic unit available as part of the Virtual Telescope Project in Manciano, Italy, under the darkes skies of the Italian peninsula. The supernova is indicated by an arrow in the upper right insert.
We have found SN 2024aeee as bright as mag. 14.7 (R-mags for the reference stars from the Gaia DR2 star catalogue). SN 2024aeee was discovered on 17 Dec. 2024 and it is a type II supernova.
The beautiful host galaxy is the fascinating NGC 2523 barred spiral galaxy. Located at about 170 million light years from the Earth, shows an very elegant shape, with fine details, which we tried to preserve when processing the image above.
