Potentially Hazardous Asteroid 2024 FP2 close encounter: an image – 18 Apr. 2025.
On 22 Apr. 2025, the Potentially Hazardous Asteroid 2024 FP2 had a relatively close, but obviously safe encounter with the Earth, coming as close as 7.9 millions of km from us. We spotted it and here we share our picture.
Potentially Hazardous Asteroid 2024 FP2: 18 Apr. 2025.
The image above comes from a single 120-second exposure, remotely taken with the “Elena” (PlaneWave 17″ + Paramount MEII + SBIG STL-6303E) robotic unit available as part of the Virtual Telescope Project. The telescope tracked the apparent motion of the asteroid, so it looks like a sharp dot of light, while stars leave short trails.
When we imaged it, asteroid 2024 FP2 was at about 13.8 million of km from us and safely approaching.
This 140-320 meters large asteroid reached its minimum distance (about 7.9 millions of km, 33 times the average lunar distance) from us on 22 Apr. 2025, at 11:16 UTC (source: Nasa/JPL). Of course, there were no risks at all for our planet.
