Near-Earth Asteroid 2025 HU2 close encounter: an image – 25 Apr. 2025

We spotted the near-Earth Asteroid 2025 HU2 soon after its safe close encounter with the Earth, on 25 Apr. 2025.  It came as close as 410.000 km from the center of the Earth, a bit more than the average distance of the Moon.

The image above comes from a single 120-second exposure, remotely taken with the Celestron C14+Paramount ME+SBIG ST-10XME robotic unit available as part of the Virtual Telescope Project. The telescope tracked the fast apparent motion of the asteroid, this is why it looks like a sharp dot of light in the center (indicated by an arrow),  while stars leave long, bright streaks on the background.

At the observing time, asteroid 2025 HU2 was at about 415.000 km from our telescope, already leaving after its safe close approach to the Earth.

This 4.5m-10m large asteroid reached its minimum distance (about 410.000 km from the center of the Earth.) from us on 25 Apr. 2025, at 11:13 UTC (source: Nasa/JPL). Of course, there were no risks at all for our planet.
