Nova Scorpii 2015 ( = PNV J17032620-3504140): an image (18 Feb. 2015)
On 11.8 Feb. 2015, Tadashi Kojima, Gunma-ken, Japan, reported the discovery of a bright transient in Scorpius, likely a galactic nova. The provisional designation is PNV J17032620-3504140 on the Central Bureau for Astronomical Telegrams (CBAT) website. Patrick Schmeer, (Bischmisheim, Germany) , promptly located a possible progenitor on Nomad1, GSC2.2 and 2Mass catalogues, suggesting an amplitude of about 9 magnitudes or so. Later, spectroscopy provided confirmation of the nova nature. At the discovery time, it was reported at magnitude 9.5, unfiltered.
On Feb. 18, we remotely used the Virtual Telescope to look at this object, despite its altitude was of only 10 degrees (!). The image above comes from the average of three, 10-seconds exposures, unfiltered, remotely collected with the PlaneWave 17″+Paramount ME+SBIG STL-6303E robotic unit part of the Virtual Telescope Project. The nova was estimated at mag. 9.5 (R mags for the reference stars from UCAC-4).
