IC 342, a wonderful spiral galaxy – Cam

Among the many wonderful cosmic objects out there, the intermediate spiral galaxy IC 342 is one of the most considered. Placed at about 10 millions of light years from us, it is outside our Local Group.

It was discovered by William Frederick Denning, a British amateur astronomer, in 1895. IC 342 is one of the apparently largest galaxies we can see. This galaxy shines in the Camelopardalis (the Giraffe) constellation, heavily obscured by dust clouds of the Milky Way. This makes harder to see it, though the field all around is beautifully full of stars.

The images above comes from the average of 39, 300 seconds  exposures, remotely taken with the “Elena” (PlaneWave 17″+Paramount ME+SBIG STL-6303E) robotic unit part of the Virtual Telescope Project. Exposures were unguided. The image is very deep showing stars down to mag. 22.0.
