Comet C/2011 L4 Pan-STARRS, image and spectrum: 17 Apr. 2013
On 17 Apr. 2013, the Virtual Telescope visited comet c/2011 L4 Pan-STARRS with both its telescopes, with the aim to capture both an image and a spectrum.
Above is the average of 18 unfiltered images, remotely taken with the PlaneWave 17 robotic unit, each integrated for 90 seconds, with the Paramount ME mount tracking the apparent motion of the body. The image scale is 1.2″/pixel and the comet shows a very beautiful, large tail, displaying its typical shape.
Below, is a low resolution spectrum taken remotely with the Celestron c14 robotic unit, hosting a diffraction grating. The data were reduced using RSpec and, after calibration, some features were identified.
