Potentially Hazardous Asteroid 2013 QR1: amazing video and image! (24 Aug. 2013)
On 24 Aug. 2013, the PlaneWave 17″ robotic unit was used to follow potentially hazardous asteroid 2013 QR1, during our online, live feed covering this asteroid. It was a great event and asteroid showed very well!
The image above comes from a single 300 seconds exposure, with the robotic mount tracking the fast apparent motion of the target, at about 70″/minute.
Below is a video coming from 180 frames, showing a spectacular sight, with 2013 QR1 “flying” across the stars: the asteroid shows evident variations in brightness, due to its rotation (note there are a few hot pixels, too)
