Comet C/2013 R1 Lovejoy: an image (10 Nov. 2013)
Comet C/2013 R1 Lovejoy is putting a nice show out there, while traveling to its perihelion. On 10 Nov. the PlaneWave 17″ robotic unit was asked to point this comet and started capturing images.
Above is the shown the combination of 15, 120-seconds exposures, registered against the motion of the comet, also tracked by the robotic mount of the telescope. The ion tail is also visible.
Comet C/2013 R1 is showing a very interesting false nucleus, showing as a little fan. Below is an image from the same night showing the central condensation:
Furthermore, a 20-deg rotation gradient was applied and some structures are visible, as below:
