NGC 7217 – Peg
NGC 7217
Placed at about 50 millions of light years, NGC 7217 is a elegant galaxy in Pegasus, showing very delicate and round spiral arms.
This object shows a few unusual features: one of the most striking is that stars in the disk are rotating in opposite directions, suggesting what we see today is the outcome of an ancient merging with another galaxy.
The image above is the average of 12, 300-seconds exposures, remotely collected with the 17″ robotic unit part of the Virtual Telescope. Scale is 1.2″/pixel. All the images were unguided.
