Farewell, mini-moon: 2020 SO very close approach, online observation – 01 Feb. 2021

After its extremely close fly-by last Dec., 2020 SO is safely coming very close again, this time to say farewell. As we know, it is the booster of the Surveyor 2 space mission, which was temporarily captured by our planet. Soon, this artificial mini-moon will leave our neighborhood, escaping into on a new orbit around the Sun. We will say it goodbye, live: join us from the comfort of your home!

The near-Earth object 2020 SO, discovered by the Pan-STARRS survey on 17 Sept. 2020, has been determined to be a space debris from the Surveyor 2 lunar mission. Since Nov. 2020, it has been temporarily captured by the Earth and will be a mini-Moon for our planet until next March. After safely coming extremely close to us last month, it is approaching us again to say farewell and go back into a new orbit around the Sun.

As we did at its first fly-by, the Virtual Telescope Project will show 2020 SO live, thanks to its advanced technologies, bringing it to you via the Internet. This way, you can join the journey from the comfort of your home.

We will show this asteroid live, online: the feed will start on 01 Feb., at 22:00 UTC.
